Keeping Connected While Quarantined

On March 23rd, all schools across Virginia were ordered to shut down all schools. Since then, we have been quarantined and have been at home maintaining our distance, learning all the while. School is a place of connections, and during quarantine, it may have been hard to maintain and form social connections. But now it is more important than ever. In fact, UC Health says the benefits of social connections are a long life, happier life, and lower level of stress hormones. But how can you stay connected, when you’re all separate?

To all my guys and gals that haven’t been able to actually possess an outside-of-school device, you can use Gmail. In fact, my friends and I use it very often. Since you aren’t allowed your phone, or others aren’t, it’s a great way to stay connected when parents are SUPER strict. In addition to Gmail, you and your buddies can also find a way to communicate on an outside-of-school device. For example, my friends and I, use Google Hangouts ALOT. So much so that I now can contact my friends in a few minutes. It’s purchasable on almost every app store! You could also find if you and your buddy have social media accounts on the same platform. In addition, my friends and I pretty much all have Pinterest. We talk, we send funny stuff, - separated and connected. And, since you may not be allowed to dine-in, or have a party, you can instead set up a Zoom or a google meet, or something like that. You may have to use one of your parents devices, but I’ll be worth it in the end. 🙂

As a human, we all need to have a social connection with someone. Introvert or extrovert, girl or boy or neither, we all need friends. It’s part of what makes us human. We are a naturally social creatures. When we know each other, we will feel empathy, one way or another, we will. That's what makes us truly human. A student once asked, “ What was the earliest sign of human civilization ? “ and the Professor answered, “ A healed femur. “ She explained that she answered like that, because empathy is what keeps the world running. Without empathy, the world may have already been destroyed. Empathy, ladies and gents - what makes us human, and how we strengthen bonds with people.

“Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler.
