Kamala Harris, A Woman in History

2020 will be known for many things: COVID, forest fires, deaths, stock market crashes, and lots of things. But what may be one of the most memorable is the first 1) Female, 2) Black 3) Asian, Vice President. So many glass ceilings are broken by one person named Kamala Harris! But that now leaves the question of who exactly is Kamala Harris.

Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20th 1964. She was born to a Jamaican man and an Indian mother. Both were educated well, and both influenced their daughter to become something great. In 1986 she received her first degree at Howard University, in Political Science and Economics. Three years later, Kamala Harris then got another degree at The University California’s Hasting College of Law in San Francisco. This time, however, it was a law degree. Later, Kamala marries Doug Emhoff, an entertainment lawyer, in 2014.

Kamala Harris' career in politics began when she was only twenty-six years old. First, she was a district attorney for Alameda California. Then, in 1998, she served as a district attorney for the careers for criminals unit, and in just two years, she led the attorney divisions on family and children. She then served as a State Attorney for 7 years, before taking on the Senate. In 2015 Barba Boxer announced that she would not be running for Senate again. Kamala took this opportunity and announced that she would be running for Senate. In 2018, Kamala won the race by a landslide. During her time in the Senate, Kamala served on many committees such as the Judiciary Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence.

When the 2020 elections were announced, Kamala began her campaign for the race for president in 2019. Sadly, however, she dropped out of it early on. But in August 2020, Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee, announced that he would choose Kamala Harris as his running mate. The race to president last year was one that our grandchildren will remember, and even their great grandchildren. The most recurring topics of that year's race was the COVID - 19 pandemic and the tension between black communities and the police. There was much controversy surrounding the election, but in the end, Kamala and Biden celebrated with a victory speech in Wilmington, Delaware. On this very special occasion, Kamala Harris dawned a white pantsuit, as a nod to the suffragette movement. ( 100 years ago, women were fighting for the right to vote. ) As Kamala embraced her victory, she said, and I quote:

“ While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last. Because every little girl watching tonight will see that this is a country of possibilities. “

Kamala Harris ladies and gents, a woman that made history more than once.
