Ultimate Super Smash Bros. Review

With the recent release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, everyone is talking about Smash Bros. So today I'm going to write a review on all of the Smash Bros. games so far.

Super Smash Bros.

This game was released in 1999 for the N64 and man was it a hit. For

those of you who don't know (which is probably none of you) Super Smash Bros is a series of fighting games with Nintendo characters, and later on a few Capcom, Sega, and Konami. In this game you start off with eight characters: Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Pikachu, Fox, Kirby, and Yoshi. Later on you can unlock four more characters: Luigi, Captain Falcon, Ness, and Jigglypuff. There is a 1-4 player Smash mode where you can choose a stage and fight your friends or a CPU. Or, if you just want to play alone, you can try the solo mode where you go through a series of levels until you get to Master hand the final boss. Solo mode is also how you unlock those four characters I mentioned earlier. The game play is amazing for its time. I give this game an 8/10.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee was released in 2001 for the Gamecube. Super Smash Bros. Melee is the second installment of the Smash bros series, and many people consider this game to be the best one in the series. The reason for that is because it is the most competitive game in the series. There are still tournaments held for it today. But in my opinion, melee is not that great. I like it, but it's not one of my favorites. I don't think the graphics are all that great for 2001. Luigi's mansion came out the same year as a launch title for the Gamecube, and it had way better graphics. I do like the character roster; it has all the characters from the first game and it added in some new ones. There are 26 characters, which is a big jump from the first game. I give this game a 6/10.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released in 2008 for the Wii. It is the third installment in the series. People just hated this game, and I have no idea why! This is my favorite Smash Bros. game out of the 4 I'm reviewing. Brawl had amazing graphics for 2008, and it looked better than most games on the wii. They put so much detail in the characters and stages. They even added in a story mode called the Subspace Emissary which had amazing levels, an amazing story, and amazing cut scenes. But the cut scenes did not have and dialogue, but that wasn't a big problem. I find the game play really fun but it's a bit slow. I think that's why people don't like it, because Melee is fast paced and competitive, while Brawl is slow and more casual. The character roster is pretty cool and big, but they removed some characters that were in Melee and that's probably another reason people don't like it. It only has 37 characters though and that's not that big of a jump from Melee. Good thing that Brawl supports Gamecube controllers or else I don't think anyone would play it. A big problem with this game is the online play. The Wii is known for having terrible online game servers, and Brawl is no exception. It is very laggy and hard to play. But the online is no longer available because the Wii’s online service shut down in 2014. I give this game a 8/10.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS

Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS released in 2014 for the Wii U and 3DS. We had to wait six years after Brawl for this game to come out. That's a long time, especially for Smash Bros. But it was worth the wait, because this game is amazing! It was also the first Smash Bros. game on a handheld console, and it worked pretty well. Many people prefer to play it on Wii U. I also agree with that; it's just not as good on the 3DS. They were pretty much the same things but with some minor differences. But there was a pretty cool exclusive part for the Wii U version, it allowed up to eight players instead of four, like the other Smash Bros. games. The graphics were amazing, especially on the Wii U. they were smooth, colorful, and vibrant. And the game play gets a bit more competitive, which is an improvement. The character roster is pretty big, it has 58 characters, which is a huge jump from Brawl. It brought back some characters from melee, cut a few from brawl, and brought in a lot of new ones. This game did not have a story mode, and this did not bother many people. It did have an online mode and it was a litter better than Brawls, but not by much. The Wii U online was playable, but the online on 3DS was terrible. I give this game a 9/10.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the newest game in the series, and it was released in 2018 for the Nintendo Switch. This game is by far the best in the series. The graphics are phenomenal. It goes back to that fast paced Melee game play, it brought back the story mode, and it brought back every single character from the entire series while it added in some new ones. That brings it to a total of 74 characters. 11 of the characters were new to the series. You can also create your own rule sets and save them. Instead of picking your character first, you pick the stage first. The online is great and there is little to no lag. You can create arenas so you can play with your friends. They added in these things called spirits, which are mainly used in the story mode called, World of Light. The spirits have certain perks and can help you in battle. World of Light is pretty fun, but it only has a few cut scenes. Don't worry Melee players, there are special

Gamecube controllers made for the Switch, so you can play Ultimate with a Gamecube controller. The theme song for this game is the first one in the series that has lyrics. I only have one problem with this game, and that is the fact that the announcer doesn't scream the name of the game like in every other Smash Bros. game. I give this game a 10/10.
